Colour Awareness Course

Written and tutored by Alan Deadman

Course overview
Colour Theory is very enjoyable, but complex. This course shows you the fundamental aspects of the subject, provides authoritative terminology and gives you ideas and exercises to work with allowing you to build upon your experiences and apply your knowledge with confidence.

The types of subjects covered within the course are as follows - colour contrast, materials, colour wheel, colour peception and context Analysis of colour, application of theory to design and print.

Colour theory is suitable for people who use colour in any capacity – therapists, interior designers, hair stylists, decorators, garden designers, textile designers, playgroup workers, paint originators, car stylists, dye manufacturers, product designers, photographers and fine artists - anyone who has curiosity about colour. You don’t need artistic skills, just so long as you have a liking for colours and using them – and you want to advance your awareness. Our course is concise and the nature of correspondence study means you are in control of your time; study at your own convenience; there is no pressure, as within a formal college curriculum. Another plus – you don’t have to spend a great deal on materials, just some designer colours, brushes etc.If you are able to see colours, you can do this course and you will find it intellectually stimulating, taking you into new territory. The practical exercises are as much based around personal perception as they are discriminative skills. You will be able to explore your own colour awareness through reflection and experiment and organised procedures; and will have the opportunity to receive positive criticism in feedback from one of our qualified and experienced tutors. The process gives an insight into the complexity of the visible spectrum, vision and perception and suggests avenues for further study. Based on the accumulation of knowledge and practical application of theory from pioneers such as Newton, Chevreux, Albers, Munsell and Itten, there is a rich thread of purposeful discipline within our course. But above all, this type of ‘discovery learning’ will give you a whole lot of fun.

Support

All our courses are written to be complete in themselves. However we realise that students may appreciate being able to get clarification about various things as they work through their programme as well wanting reassurance that they are putting techniques into practice effectively. The Administration Centre is available seven days a week and the Course Artist provides the technical support to deal with relevant queries.

Most courses have their own dedicated Course Artist. The Course Artist keeps the course up to date and relevant to today's students. They are available to the individual student for advice and encouragement. Each course has regular exercises and assignments that are constructed in such a way as to give the student the opportunity to practice the techniques learnt on the course and to test themselves as they go along. The student is encouraged to submit the assignment work to the college for the Course Artist to critique. The student's work will be returned together with the Course Artist's personal critique. On many courses the assignment work may be suitable for inclusion in a student's Portfolio of Work that could be very useful later. The college will use the assignments submitted as the basis for any award of a Diploma or Certificate.
