Course overview
Still Life is the art of drawing and painting inanimate objects, fruit, flowers, food and every day things. The term still life comes from the Dutch 'stilleven' and dates back to the 1600's, to a time when still life was associated with material decay and the futility of worldly life. Today, though without symbolism of times gone by, Still Life remains a major and important branch of the arts. Our course (C15), new in 2007 provides a very good entry into the subject.
The course takes a practical paintings approach to the subject and it rooted in the traditions of western figurative art. By figurative we mean 'representational' work we can recognise. Students will be encouraged to look at things with a fresh eye, to relish colour and to build confidence by developing and putting into practice good technique.
