Cartooning Diploma Course

Course overview
The college has unrivalled experience in developing cartoonists. For almost 75 years from our beginnings in Fleet Street, we have been working with our students to help them realise their dreams - to become published cartoonists. Other providers offer pale imitations of our well proven course. With 28 study units covering every aspect of this marvellous art form - Getting started, Basic techniques, colour and perspective, The art of Humour, Cartoon layouts, Children, animals & birds in cartoons, Figure drawing, Heads & eyes, Features & expressions, Character identification, the main Joke formats, Strip cartoons, Caricatures and much much more - our students receive a comprehensive course that we believe is unequalled elsewhere.  You can find shorter courses, you can find cheaper courses - but you won't find a better one!

London Art College's written course provides very practical advice, sound techniques and a modern approach to the subject. The course includes advice on selling your work and developing the commercial opportunities that your talent can open up.  Working 4-6 hours a week, most students can complete the course in under twelve months. At the end of it, you will have the knowledge and skills you need to make the grade as a cartoonist with real prospects of selling your work on a regular basis.

Students receive all the help and support they need from John Cameron the course artist. John is a successful cartoonist, artist and graphic designer. His cartoons are widely published and he has a wealth of experience that he is happy to share with his students.  John is very approachable and is happy to keep in close contact with students to ensure they get maximum value from their programme.

No previous experience is needed with this course. Basic drawing techniques are included in the programme. Course duration is approximately twelve months.

John Cameron

John is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art and holds a postgraduate M.A in visual communication from Birmingham University.

His M.A thesis explored the limits of visual cognition in ‘Aphasic’ (word blind) stroke patients using simple line cartoons as a means of communication.

His early career in London involved working in Publishing and a freelance illustrator for Newspapers such as the Sunday Times focusing on courtroom sketches and dramatic reconstruction.

Whilst making a living as a creative director for a succession of Blue Chip international design he continued illustration and had to date published six children’s books.

He was awarded the D&AD Silver medal in 1983 for design work for a set of illustrated Post office stamps.

Drawing is at the core of all Johns achievements in cartooning, illustrating and design and as an avid science fiction enthusiast.
He is equally at home using traditional art techniques with the latest technology on his Macintosh computer using software like Photoshop, Illustrator and Freehand.
