Pastels Online Art Course

Tutored by Monika Cilmi BA, MA, PGCE.

The Pastels Course is a Certificate Course

This course provides a flexible and enjoyable means of developing your artistic talent through the medium of Pastels, with tutor feedback on your coursework. We cover all the practical issues related to drawing and painting with pastels.

When working with pastels, it's essential to understand that the magic happens when colours are skilfully combined on the paper rather than on the palette. Achieving the unique and captivating effects of pastel art involves the art of overlaying and skilful colour blending.

Pastels have unique characteristics which make them a favoured choice among artists, offering a distinctive and expressive way to create stunning and visually striking artwork.

Pastels are very exciting to work with –

  • They are known for their rich, pure, and vibrant colours. You can directly apply these colours to the paper, allowing for intense and immediate colour impact.
  • Pastels can be used for various techniques, from delicate and fine lines to broad strokes and blending. They are adaptable to different styles of art, including realism, impressionism, and abstract art and this course  looks at how to use pastels for theses styles.
  • Pastels allow for an intimate and expressive creative process as they are a very tactile medium.
  • Pastels are also very portable making them an ideal medium for artists who enjoy working outdoors.

If you're eager to receive expert guidance and valuable feedback that will help you build a strong foundation in pastel art, this course is tailor-made for you!

This comprehensive course is designed to provide you with a thorough understanding of pastel techniques, ensuring you have ample opportunities to practice and refine your skills. The course is structured to last approximately 6 months, although we allow students the flexibility to of up to two years to complete it. Whether you're a novice or have drawing experience and looking to embark on your pastel art journey, this course is an ideal starting point.

Students are able to upload their artwork to the 'The Art Room' on our website. Each student is given a unique username and password on enrolment for their own private area in The Art Room.

Students can upload their artwork for the tutor to collect and critique. The tutor will then upload feedback for the student to download. If you do not have facilities to upload your artwork, you can mail your artwork to the tutors centre and receive your artwork back with your critique.

It is essential you label all packages/artwork with your student number.

All our courses are written to be your comprehensive guide into each of their subject matters. We understand that students appreciate clarification about various aspects of their work from a course tutor, whom provide reassurance that techniques are put into practice effectively.

Each courses has its own dedicated Tutor. The tutor keeps the course up to date and relevant to today's students. They are available to the individual student for advice and encouragement. Each course has regular exercises and assignments that are constructed in such a way as to give the student the opportunity to practice the techniques learnt on the course and to test themselves as they go along. Students are encouraged to submit the assignment work to the college for the tutor to critique.

Coursework can be submitted online, as digital photographs, in your individual art room account and the tutor will upload their critique for you to download and retain forever.

On many courses the assignment work may be suitable for inclusion in a student's Portfolio of Work that could be very useful later. The college will use the assignments submitted as the basis for your award of a certificate.

On successful completion of this course you will have studied new skills and gained knowledge for your own enjoyment and development.
